Understanding the Mylio Vault

Mylio is designed to keep your photos safe. It does that by storing your Originals on a Vault. A Vault is Mylio’s term for a device that holds your Originals. Common Vaults include computers with lots of storage space, external hard drives, and NAS devices.

If you just have one device with Mylio on it, that device will store all your Originals. When you add a second device, you now have the choice of making one device a Vault and having the other device store optimized versions of your photos, which saves space. For example, if you have Mylio on both your computer and your phone, you’ll likely want to set up your computer to be your Vault (since it has more storage space) and your phone to be optimized, so you save space there to take more photos and videos with it.

*Pro Tip: At Mylio, we strongly recommend setting up a Vault in two separate locations. For example, one Vault could be an external hard drive you keep at home, and the other could be a desktop computer at work. That way, if an unfortunate life event like theft or fire happens, you’ll still have all your Originals preserved.

Get Set Up

You can view your Mylio setup in the Dashboard. There, you can choose which devices are set as Vaults and Auto Optimized. Here’s how:

  1. Open Mylio.
  2. Go to the Dashboard.
  3. In the Device column, click on a device.
  4. Select Device Sync Policy Settings.
  5. Select either Auto Optimized or Vault.

*Pro Tip: You can also click on Advanced Settings for more granular control. Click here to learn more about Sync Settings.

How to add an external hard drive as Vault:

  1. Open Mylio.
  2. Plug the external drive into the computer if it is not already.
  3. Open the Dashboard  in the top right corner of Mylio.
  4. Select the [ ADD ] button.
  5. Make sure the correct drive is selected, and click [ Next ].
  6. Click [ YES ] if you have photos on this Vault you want to import or [ NO ] if you do not.
  7. Click [ OK ].
  8. Your external drive will be added as a Vault in the Dashboard, and Mylio will begin to sync all original files.

How to add a new computer as a Vault:

  1. Install Mylio on that computer.
  2. Sign in with your original account information.
  3. Open the Dashboard.
  4. Click on the computer that you would like to designate as a Vault.
  5. Select Device Sync Policy Settings.
  6. Make sure to set the device to Vault.

*Pro Tip: You can also set up NAS devices and cloud storage as Vaults. Click here to set up a NAS, or click here to set up cloud storage.

Well done. Now, your Originals will automatically be stored on the device you designated as a Vault. This is a good level of protection for your photos. After you set up Vault storage, check out this article on how to get maximum space back on your phone.

Desktops, laptops, NAS, or hard drives make good Vaults

Protect Your Photos with a Vault

A Vault is ideal for protecting your files and library details. With it, your original files are automatically protected, preventing the loss that often comes when one of your devices is damaged, lost, or stolen. We recommend using an external hard drive, desktop computer, or NAS as a Vault to protect your files. You also have the option of adding a cloud service like Amazon, Google Drive, or OneDrive as a Vault for further protection, especially during travel. Then get Mylio on your mobile devices like phones and tablets. When you get Mylio on multiple devices, you’re well on your way to achieving the US government’s recommended 3-2-1 Backup: keep 3 copies of any important file, keep the files on 2 different media types, and store 1 copy offsite (e.g. outside your home or business).

Save Storage Space on Mobile

The second benefit of having a Vault is that you save storage space on your mobile devices. Since your Originals are automatically stored there, your mobile devices are freed up to store either Thumbnails or Previews, which take up much less space. This allows you to take more photos and videos on those mobile devices while still having access to all your files. It’s the best of both worlds!

Travel with Peace of Mind

Having a Vault at home also gives you peace of mind when you travel. Let’s face it, during a trip, things happen. A phone can get lost, stolen, broken, or just plain dropped in the water. It’s frustrating to lose all the photos and videos you’ve taken on that device in an instant. With Mylio’s Vault, you’re safeguarded. Files on Mylio automatically sync between devices that can see each other. So, when you have Mylio on multiple devices, your media is safe from device loss.

A Vault Connecting Devices

Bonus Benefit: Seagate + Mylio Vault

Mylio has partnered with Seagate for an incredible deal. When you buy a new Seagate Drive, you get a complimentary year of Mylio Create, which gives you a larger library size and more devices than the standard Mylio. A Seagate Drive is an ideal Vault, and with 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 5TB sizes to choose from, you have all the space you need for the photos and videos that matter.
