13. Snapseed

Platform: iOS, Android

Price: Free

What it is: Snapseed by Google simply is a robust, professional photo editor with features like a healing tool, brushes, filters, frames, HDR effects, structural and perspective edits, vignette, lens blur, “glamour glow,” and focus enhancement. What’s cool about Snapseed is it opens both JPG and RAW files for editing.

Bonus: Here is an updated 2019 tutorial on Smartseed from our friends at Mobiography.

14. Photo Editor by Aviary

Platform: iOS, Android

Price: Free, with in-app purchases

What it offers, what’s special: This app allows you to enhance and stylize your smartphone photos using filters, stickers, overlays, vignettes, a sharpening tool, a focus tool, a blemish removal tool and a teeth whitening tool, as well as apply editing tools like crop, rotate, straighten, contrast, brightness, and shadows. Aviary tells us that some of these effects are even “made by artists around the world.” The app also lets you draw your own photo captions and doodles. One differentiator here: you can sync your photos to Adobe Creative Cloud (requires Adobe ID) to access filters and tool packs from any device anywhere you might be. Instantly share your edited and stylized photos to Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.

15. Pixlr

Platform: iOS, Android

Price: Free, with in-app purchases

Why it’s cool: Pixlr provides over 2 million combos of effects, overlays and filters. Features include photo collages, auto-fix color balance, multiple exposure effects, stylizing photos to look like pencil drawings, ink sketches, and posters. A differentiator: the ‘Favorites’ button that saves your favorite effects/overlays you’ve already created. Then, of course, the table stakes: instantly sharing your finished work to your favorite social networks.

16. Lifecake

Platform: iOS, Android

Price: Free, with in-app purchases

What it’s all about: This app squarely targeted at parents of young’uns (like me! — a doting daddy of a one-year-old): “Kids grow up fast! See and share your child’s amazing progress with a private, beautiful timeline and fun music slideshows.” Lifelike has eschewed folder organization for one timeline, onto which you can combine your photos with your co-parent and relatives, with an ability to pull images down from Dropbox, Facebook, Picasa, and Instagram. Using the timeline, see photos of your child at any age, comparing their growth stages from birth to present day. Want your family to get automatic updates from your app when new photo slideshow is available? You can! Or, your family can follow the slideshows from any smartphone or computer if you grant them access.

Premium extras include exporting images to glossy-paged, hardcover books, and unlimited cloud storage.

17. Ampergram

Platform: iOS, Android

Price: $0.99

Why it’s unique: Ampergram helps you overlay Instagram pictures with type. Tap into the Ampergram community’s photos, or capture and tag your own.  You tag photos of letters in Instagram using #ampergram, and you also tag the letter/number the photo is of (e.g., #H). Crop in on the single letter you want to use, and you’ll discover what Ampergram calls “Instagram typography.”

18. Retromatic 2.0

Platform: iOS, Android

Price: $1.99, with in-app purchases

What makes it cool: Retromatic 2.0 sends your smartphone images back in time with vintage-styled themes, stickers and text effects. Create fun retro photos and e-posters from the era of your choice — 50s, 60s, 70s, and so on. There are 18 retro filters, 17 graphic themes in 17 colors, more than 70 modifiable retro stickers, and support for high-res (up to 1280 x 1280) images. Then share your old-timer pictures to newfangled Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.

19. Magic Hour Lite/Free

Platform: iOS, Android

Price: Well, free (with in-app purchases)

Why it’s cool: Like other smartphone photo apps, Magic Hour Lite/Free offers the traditional, professional image editing features like exposure/contrast/brightness/saturation adjustments, frames, vignettes, tilt-shift (blur), B/W mode, and preset filters, as well as some cool retro filters. But, no surprise, the truly cool features come with the premium upgrade version: “inventive” DIY filters you can then display in the UGC Filter Market to like-minded shutterbugs across the world. The premium version also lets you download artistic effect filters such as Toon, Painting, Illust, Sketch, Colorpicker, and Beauty.

20. Rakuga Cute

Platform: iOS, Android

Price: Free, with in-app purchases

Why it’s popular: Rakuga Cute is a smartphone photo ‘decoration’ app or ‘photo graffiti’ app that includes tools for rolling stamps, framing, text with a variety of pen types, pastels, neons patterns, and shading. Oddly (and bearing in mind it’s made in Asia), it has a ‘beauty mode’ used to whiten faces. This app is also popular because it offers ‘chic photo processing’ in the form of filters, collages and mosaics.

21. LINE Camera

Platform: iOS, Android

Price: Free, with in-app purchases

What’s cool: LINE Camera is another popular photo ‘decoration’ app offering more than 100 different kinds of frames and rich fonts, plus thousands of stamps. “New stamps,” the app’s description tells us,  “featuring popular characters and stamps drawn by famous illustrators are added every week.” You can create your own original stamps using illustrations, text or photos, with plenty of customizable filters. Like Rakuga Cute, LINE also includes a ‘Beauty’ tool. Who’s this app target audience? You’re probably already there: girls and women who want “cute, sleek” filters, collages for creative flexibility and posting on social media. Another cool feature: video recording with “fun and cute” stickers” as overlays (à la SnapChat).

22. Path on – Swipe to Type

Platform: iOS, Android

Price: $1.99

What makes it unique: The app’s clever description “Now your pictures can have a thousand words with Path On” says it all: this is a fun, font-focused photo editing app scrapbookers will love. Choose from 300 different fonts, plus backdrops and filters to decorate your photos with stylized words, quotes, or lyrics without restrictions on font alignment, spacing or size. Especially cool: your text goes where you draw a line with your finger; you can also place text in basic shapes like circles, squares, and spirals.

23. 3DSteroid Pro

Platform: Android

Price: $2.90

What it does: 3DSteroid Pro helps you create stereoscopic 3D images, including high-res images. Align and rotate certain elements in your image left and right to give you a stereoscopic 3D appearance. …Tell you what: things get pretty technical from there — check out the demo video for the details:

24. PixelWakker

Platform: iOS

Price: $2.99

Why it’s cool: PixelWakker takes its inspiration from pointillist painters breaking “down your pixels into art.” I’d call the effect ‘dot art’. Full of its own unique effects (most of which are vector-based) — pixel image, dots, line, or color rain – the app helps you generate creative product you might not have previously imagined. Output formats include hyper-clear, scalable PDFs.

Does that give you enough options to choose from? Yes? Awesome! Now pick your favorites, download them, and make your smartphone photos stand out from the photo-frenzied crowd online.
